The Wakefield Youth Work Team’s Youth Voice staff support young people across Wakefield to have their say on things that are important to them.
It allows them to help make changes that improve and shape services for children and families across the district.
The Youth Voice groups have been involved in:
Shaping the Children and Young People’s Plan and The Promise
Interviews for new children’s services employees
Training for Foster Carers and other professionals
Developing websites, including Care 4 Us and WF-I-Can
Creating documents, policies, and services that are child and family friendly
An anti-bullying campaign and policy
Mystery shopper style ‘reviews’
Presenting MindFest – and lots more!
It’s all about raising children and young people’s voices, which is why we have lots of different groups to give different opportunities to do this.
Our groups include:

Build Our Futures

This is the main youth voice group, members from all of the other youth voice sub-groups come together at this to represent all young people. Here they talk about district wide issues that affect young people, working with Wakefield Council and partner agencies to help improve the futures of Wakefield’s children and young people.

Improvement Group

This group works to support the improvement journey Wakefield’s Children’s Services are going through. They help shape the children service by taking part in quality assurance activities and reviews of services and documents to make sure that are easily understood and child and young person friendly.

Anti-bullying Group

Young people in this group are responsible for driving work to raise awareness of bullying. Working together with partners in education they develop policies, resources, and campaigns aimed at stopping bullying.

Emotional Wellbeing Group

Mental health is a key priority for young people.  As such, this group was created to promote positive wellbeing and to help us improve access to mental health support for young people

Youth Parliament (UKYP) / Youth Council

Members of the UK Youth Parliament are elected and use their voice to bring about social change through meaningful representation and campaigning. They work on local, regional, and national priorities, representing the views of young people from their area. To find out more about the UKYP visit their website here. You can also view the latest notes and work from our local work and representatives here.

Next Steps

With a specific focus on supporting care leavers, Next Steps work to discuss and address the challenges care leavers experience – with the aim of improving outcomes and aspirations for those preparing for independent living.

CICC (Children in Care Council)

Made up of children in care themselves, this group revolves around discussing the difficulties children in care may experience, and work to improve these.

CICC Juniors

This has the same overall purpose as the main CICC group, but is aimed at allowing younger children in care to have their say, in a format that better works for them.

Young Carers Forum

The Young Carers Forum meet to talk about the issues that affect children and young people who have caring responsibilities. Its main aims are to help identify young carers earlier, raise awareness of the challenges they face, and provide support. You might also be interested to learn about our Young Carers group here.
